FOREWORD
BY THE
CHAIR OF THE DCRSC BOARD OF
TRUSTEES

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Much of May has been taken up with the arrangements for our Festival Day and Annual General Meeting to be held on Saturday, 6th June at Sherwell Church Hall North Hill (on the campus of Plymouth University).   You will find further details in this Newsletter, but I hope you have all had invitations.  One of our Co-opted Trustees and Volunteer, Christine Reid has worked tirelessly to make this day a success and a good attendance will be the right reward.  The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress have accepted our invitation to attend which will be a good opportunity for them to become aware of the work our Charity does.

The Members and Co-opted Members of the Board of Trustees have continued to “roll up their sleeves” in the absence of a Manager.   Without also, the commitment of our DCRSC Volunteers, the support given to our service users would be extremely difficult.

Our very best wishes must go to Geoff Read our Newsletter Editor, who is actually in hospital as I write this, but he hopes to be discharged very soon.

Yours sincerely,

Lorna M. Sewell
Chair Board of Trustees

EFUGEE GROUP TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY.   The following article was published in The Herald Friday, 5th June:

An organisation which has supported refugees and asylum seekers for ten years is hold a day of festivities to mark the achievement.
The Devon & Cornwall Refugee Support Council’s Annual General Meeting will be followed by an afternoon of speeches, displays, drama and dancing reflecting some of the diverse cultures of the people whom the group has helped.
Christine Reid, a volunteer with DCRSC, said members of the public were welcome to attend the event, which starts at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, at Sherwell Church Hall on North Hill.
She said: “After lunch and a time for socialising, which will include some national dishes, the afternoon will turn to entertainment.   Firstly there will be some Tibetan music and then a group of English language students, some of whom are current and former refugees, will take to the floor.
“They will be performing some short playlets on integration into the community, and they have promised to teach us some Kurdish dancing.”
There will also be a number of speeches and presentations, and the event will be attended by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Plymouth.

P
LYMOUTH TRADES COUNCIL MAY DAY FESTIVAL 2009.   An article by Christine R., Volunteer, Co-opted Member on the Board of Trustees and Assistant Food Programme Coordinator.
This was held on in the Plymouth Guildhall on the Bank Holiday Monday, 1st May.   DCRSC was represented by Trish B.   One of the themes for this year was “Human Rights” so Trish prepared her exhibit around that subject whilst emphasising the Practical Support that DCRSC provides.   Were we busy?   Well... not really!   But it gave us the opportunity to make ourselves known better in the community.
A lot of organisations were represented in addition to the major Trades Union:   END, Free Palestine, Pensioners’ Forum, etc.
There was also an audio / visual presentation about Apartheid, with pictures of South Africa and the Black Power Movement in the USA.
Christine R. was accosted by a Highwayman and, in conversation, it transpired he was a Shop Steward with the Retail Industry with special responsibility for Food.   He has suggested that we contact him with a view to DCRSC being their Adopted Charity in the future.   One of my highlights of the day was a fabulous bowl of soup with some savouries... prepared by some Portuguese caterers.
It was an interesting day and it certainly helped to raise the profile of DCRSC within the Community.

The photograph in the next column shows the DCRSC Display Stall at the Festival.

T
ALKS AND PRESENTATIONS.

Do you know the correct definition of an Asylum Seeker?

Do you really know what a Refugee is?

Do you know what happens to an Asylum Seeker when they arrive in the UK?

Are you aware of any support and / or assistance given to Refugees and Asylum Seekers in the counties of Devon & Cornwall?

If you answered “No” to any of these questions, then DCRSC could help you to understand more about this topic.   Volunteers are available to give a PowerPoint Presentation to groups, no matter how large or small and no matter how close or far from Plymouth!   These presentations are free of charge and we would be only too happy to dispel some of the myths and rumours that surround Asylum Seekers and Refugees.   Please get in touch with the Editor in the first instance.

ERMINOLOGY.   We all have to be dragged kickin’-and-a-screamin’ into the 21st century sometimes!   We have had to change two of the terms we currently use for varying reasons.   We will explain further at the next Volunteers’ Meetings:

Clients.   We no longer use this term.   We now refer to them as Service Users.

Caseworkers.   We no longer use this term either.   We now refer to them as Project Support Workers.

THE DCRSC FOOD PROGRAMME

F
OOD.   We’re still issuing Food Parcels at a fairly high rate each week.   The recent increase in the Food Budget has certainly eased the pressure on us having to limit what we issue to our needy service users – although at times – it’s still necessary to do so.   We’ve continued to receive some very generous donations of provisions which help to keep our store well stocked up and have increased our supply of the Nice-to-Have Items.   We are so very grateful for these donations.

T
OILETRIES. Thanks to some very generous donations, our stocks of Toiletries is on the increase.   Some small screw-top bottles have been given and this has enabled us to decant shower gel, shampoo, etc., from the larger economy-size bottles.   We would rather give a little to a lot than vice-versa, if you know what we mean!   That said, we are still in need of:

Needed Toiletries items

T
HANK YOU!   The volunteer Food Programme Coordinator would like to express his especial thanks to all those who gave their time and / or who made donations during recent months.   It is work that is so often unseen but very much appreciated and... very necessary!   Thank you also to all those who have donated goods this past month.

The following article was especially written for this Newsletter by Scott Little of START:

The Football Team started following an initial conversation between a student worker from START and volunteers (David) from DCRSC who all agreed that there was a demand for male service users to play football and that these needs were not currently being met.   Names of those interested in playing football were taken at START Cultural Kitchen as well by Project Support Workers at START and DCRSC.   Our first few sessions were a success and were attended by service users from eight different ethnicities.
The equipment (balls, bibs and marker cones) was kindly lent to us by Marjons University.   After the initial success we were doubtful about how we could continue this football project for the long term as the university requires their equipment back during term time and the fact funding applications can take some time.
Despite this uncertainty, the numbers of service users attending our sessions on a Friday were consistently high (around about 20).   The word about the project had started to get around the various charitable partners that work with START and DCRSC, and we were eventually approached by the REC (Racial Equality Council) to attend a meeting with Groundwork and the local Police Diversity Unit about the way forward and the sustainability of the team.   Groundwork run a modern, state-of-the-art 3-G pitch at Saltash and want to encourage more BME (Black, Minority Ethnic) groups to use their facilities.   As part of the agreement, Groundwork allowed the team to use the facilities free of charge with the REC paying for transportation costs.   The facilities have proven popular with the service users and volunteers.   The 3-G pitch technology has only been in the UK for a few years and can be described as ‘plastic grass’, which makes it an easier flat surface to play on and reduces the risk of injury.   After several sessions numbers began to increase.   Groundwork has allocated further funding to ensure all the players have the adequate equipment (shirts, shorts, etc.,) to participate in future sessions.
The players are not just enjoying the vast amount of health benefits of regular exercise (which will save the National Health Service money in the long run), but also the chance to practice / learn English and to experience and learn about other cultures. The football sessions have led to socialising outside of these sessions between players of various different ethnicities. In particular, it has now become the norm for players to attend START’s Cultural Kitchen and to socialise more.   A team has been set up due to several agencies (Groundwork, DCRSC, REC & START) working together to achieve the common goal of having a multi ethnic football team of asylum seekers and refugees.   We‘ll be looking to play friendly games over the next year or so, but have the long term aim of entering a local league.   We’re still looking for players and volunteers to help run the team, if you are interested or would like support the team please contact David or Bill 01752 265 592.
